I’ve been lucky enough to get to work with some very extraordinary projects and people over my 10+ years in music especially getting to take the British folk genre out of its usual home and collaborate with many diverse sounds. Some of the great honours were as follows:
City of London Sinfonia asked me to sing a selection of my songs arranged for full orchestra (see video of highlights below) one of the greatest sound experiences and privileges ever.
I released an album of improvised folk songs with the Notes Inegales group who devised an entire album with my stream of conscious folk melodies and fragments. We created a full length album called Van Diemans Land to be found HERE
BBC 2018 Proms I presented and performed in the BBC’s dedicated folk Prom in 2018 backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Albert Hall. One of the great life privileges to get to sing with this Orchestra in this famous hall.
British Council Sudan, Bangladesh I have travelled to many countries in the world with the British Council and been lucky enough to collaborate with many musicians but the projects in Sudan with local musicians there as well as in Bangladesh were by far my most memorable and inspiring.
Folk Connections, Norway – working with some of Norways finest folk musicians to create a bespoke concert of British Scandinavian material Japan Gagaku collaboration. On one of my several trips to perform in Japan I had the honour to work with one of the oldest musical traditions in the world the ancient art of Gagaku Music established in Japan as a court music in the 8th century and mostly unchanged since then. One of the most sublime opportunities in my life.
Of Time and Space – WW1 Centenary concert with the Unthanks in 2017 was a heartbreaking journey to write songs that acknowledged the impact of WW1 on the UK and the devastating effects on our folk heritage Nessi Gomes – Diamonds and Demons. One of my dearest friends and sublime singer. Nessi’s debut album which I guest vocalised on has been listened to millions of times and is a much loved album.
Jersey Roaming Soundtrack – I was invited by Rob da Bank the DJ and festival producer to contribute to this collection of songs celebrating the island and nature of Jersey.
NMB Hullucinations – in 2018 I become one of the New Music Biennial composers selected by the PRSFoundation to compose for Hull City. I spent many weeks there recording some of the last of the Trawler Fishermen and also the local Gypsy community and this 15min live recording was what came from this project Broadsides and Ballads – with Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Robin Mann was a project I co founded with SoundMusic UK as a musical investigation into the broadside trade. We created and toured a live show of songs from this vital part of our printed folk heritage.
